What hail damage actually looks like on a roof
Genuine hail damage on an asphalt shingle is a soft, round bruise where granules have been knocked away and the black mat beneath is exposed, and it is randomly scattered rather than in lines or patterns. It almost always comes with corroborating dents on nearby soft metal: gutters, downspouts, vents, flashing, the air conditioner fins, the mailbox. Adjusters look for that soft-metal evidence first, because it confirms hail actually struck the property and indicates the stone size and direction.
What genuine hail damage looks like
- Round bruises with granules missing and the darker asphalt mat exposed underneath.
- Soft to the touch, like a bruise on fruit, when the damage is recent.
- Randomly scattered across the slope. Hail falls randomly, so damage in neat rows or lines is almost certainly something else.
- Heavier on the elevations facing the storm. Wind-driven hail strikes some faces more than others, and that directional pattern supports your account.
- Corroborated on soft metal. Dents in gutters, downspouts, vents, flashing, air conditioner fins, garage doors, mailboxes and window screens.

The soft-metal test, which you can do from the ground
You do not need to go on the roof, and you should not if you are not confident. Walk the property and examine everything soft and metal at ground level: the gutters and downspouts, the air conditioner condenser fins, vents and flashing visible from below, the mailbox, the garage door, window screens, and any metal patio furniture. Dents there establish that hail of a given size struck the property, and that alone supports an inspection.
Falls are the realistic risk here, and a damaged roof is more slippery and less stable than it looks. Photograph from a ladder at the eave, from an upstairs window, from the ground with a zoom lens, or from rising ground nearby. If the roof genuinely needs walking, that is what the adjuster and your contractor are for.
Why the delay problem matters more than the damage
Hail frequently bruises a roof without causing a leak. The shingle then fails faster than it should, sometimes years later. By then the policy suit limitation period, commonly one to two years from the date of loss, may have closed. If a significant hail event hit your area, it is worth having the roof looked at while the claim is still open to you, not once water is coming through the ceiling.
Photograph the roof in good condition every spring and store the images with their dates. The hardest argument to defeat is "that damage was pre-existing", and dated photographs end it.
